Asian Drama of the Week 4

I couldn’t choose one Reply Series because even though I could like one more than the other, they were still my favourite to watch. At first, I thought 1997 was the best, the 1994 came out and that one was amazing. 1988 came out… I loved it but the ending didn’t suffice for me so Reply 1994 still is the winner for me. All 3 series, you did have to figure out who main female lead got married to but the story surrounded events that happened at that time of year.*Interesting fact: Different families but parents played by the same people all three shows: Sung Dong-Il & Lee Il-Hwa* Reply 1997 “Set in the 1990's, "Reply 1997" follows female high high school student Shi-Won (Jung Eun-Ji), who idolizes boyband H.O.T and her 5 high school friends.” - Asian Week Starring: Jung Eun-Ji, Seo In-Guk, Shin So-Yul, Eun Ji-Won, Infinite’s Hoya, Lee Si-Un      Reply 1994 “Through the characters, drama series follows various cultural events in 1994, including the emergence of Kpop group "Seo Taiji and Boys" and the Korean Basketball League.”Starring: Go Ara, Jung Woo, Yoo Yeon-Seok, Kim Sung-Kyun, Son Ho-Jun, B1A4’s Baro, & Min Do-Hee.       Reply 1988 “In 1988, Duk-Sun (Hyeri), Jung-Hwan (Ryoo Joon-Yeol), Sun-Woo (Ko Gyung-Pyo) and Dong-Ryong (Lee Dong-Hwi) are high school students and Taek (Park Bo-Gum) is a go player. These five people have been friends since they were little kids. They all grew up together and are neighbors to this day. Their families are also very close to each other. They always hang around Taek's room and spend time together.” - Asian WikiStarring: Girl’s Day’s Hyeri, Ryoo Joon-Yeol, Ko Gyung-Pyo, Park Bo-Gum, Lee Dong-Hwi    Both 1997 and 1994, used the same actors from the past and present. Both shows, the whole gang met up together with no mentions of who ends up together. That story is completely told through the past. In 1997, it was focused on idol groups such HOT from a fan’s (Eunji) perspective. In 1994, it was about University Basketball and 1988 was focused on the Olympics. Now even though it does start out in the year in the respective name, the show follows them throughout until about marriage which is when you find out who got married.  The cool thing about 1994 and 1988 is the crossover. So say you are watching 1994, when that show gets to 1997, you seem some characters from the 1997 show. Same goes for 1988 and 1994, so it was nice to see who would be cameo.When I watched Reply 1997, it was the first show that I watched that used Satoori (dialect) so it intrigued me. Even though Eunji’s character is so loud, I found her hilarious. It’s the original drama so I can't say too many bad things about it. Reply 1994 has to be my top favourite because on top of the Satoori, every character had an interesting story line, I was truly confused who the husband would be, and the characters are just REALLY funny. This was another show where I did bawl my eyes out because of the main characters towards the end. Reply 1988, I liked and I was REALLY confused between Junghwan and Taec because you know it had to be either one. I like both but couldn’t tell who it would be. The previous Reply's you can kind of tell who it could be as the story went on. But the ending was REALLY iffy. It was as if they tried to rush it or focused too much on other things. It felt like the main characters weren’t the main characters. You would think that DukSeon was the main character so you would see she would end up with first but her sister Bora’s relationship was shown through the majority of the series and you find out who Dukseon ends up with a few episodes before the last. (They extended this series to this 20 ep so slightly disappointed.) This show, unfortunately, didn’t have much Satoori. Sigh. Only the parents had Satoori, not the kids. It is still enjoyable to watch as it has its funny tidbits but be warned about the ending. Which was your favourite? Is it addable to your list?
